When 14 year old Alex Kaminsky loses his home and his uncle to a house fire, the first thing on his mind is to find Marco - his older brother. It is not long before Alex discovers Marco has been sent to an internment camp, as so many other Ukranians in Canada have been. Alex sets off to find his brother, relying on the kindness of strangers and his street-smarts to uncover the mystery of Marco's whereabouts.

An important story with a lovable protagonist. Firebird tells an important perspective on the history of Ukranians in Canada, and the internment camps that occurred during WWI. Alex's viewpoint is an easy one to follow, and you'll quickly find yourself immersed in his perilous yet beautiful journey.
