The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly is a novel about a girl living in 1899 Texas who is experiencing gender inequality. She lives on a farm with her large family, including her botanist grandfather with whom she is studying evolution and all forms of life. This is really a one of a kind book that every girl should read. The storytelling and writing is beautiful and the message behind it is powerful.

OVERALL RATING 9/10
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It is hard for me to imagine how things look when I have never seen them, but for years since I first read this book I have had crystal clear images of the settings in it ingrained in my head. The characters are so diverse and the plot is immersive. Jacqueline Kelly mastered every aspect of a good book from drama to humour to story line.
PROS
Feminist
Good child’s perspective

Beautiful
Wonderful imagery
CONS
Uses a small amount of racist or outdated language
Might be hard for some kids to relate to because the culture was so different in 1899
NOTES
There is a sequel to this book, but I have not read it. I assume the sequel is as good as the first one, though, and the cover looks beautiful!!
