The Penderwicks Series by Jeanne Birdsall

Updated: Jan 7, 2022

The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall is a four part series about four sisters who live with their father, ranging in age from four to twelve. The book has chapters from all of the sisters' perspectives, which makes it good for many ages. Each of the sisters has a vastly different personality. The series has a wonderful plot and great characters, as well as being entertaining and extremely heartfelt.

OVERALL RATING 9.6/10

Until I reread it recently, I had forgotten why I loved the Penderwicks so much, thinking maybe it was just some childhood phase and I wouldn’t like it anymore. Now I remember why. These books are realistic, yet fun, and very upsetting at parts. As you read the series, you watch the characters grow up. No one’s story is left unresolved. The way the Penderwicks ties in every little detail is similar to the way J.K. Rowling did it in Harry Potter. The four Penderwicks books have all of my praise and I am sure you will agree once you have read them.

PROS

Deals with difficult childhood topics

Realistic characters

The whole family loves each other and is caring

Is relatable for all ages of children (and even teens or adults)

Written wonderfully

CONS

Condones secrecy (but does deal with the consequences)

Not much minority representation
