The Twistrose Key by Tone Almhjell - 6/10

Rufus was buried under the rose bush in Lin's garden. Lin misses her beloved rodent very much, and spends much of her time standing by the rosebush and thinking about him. When a mysterious package appears at her door, Lin is whisked away into a land beyond her wildest dreams - a land where children's animal companions go when they die. In this magical world, there is a terrible situation arising, and Lin (with Rufus by her side) must work together to solve the mystery and save the world of Sylver.

OVERALL RATING 6/10

The Twisrose Key has a thrilling plot and sweet themes of love and friendship. Unfortunately, the level of violence/scariness is far to high for most kids who are of the right age to appreciate the story. The themes, such as animals walking around like humans and living in a city, would be perfect for kids, maybe aged five to nine. The amount of gore and horrible monsters, though, means I would never recommend this book to anyone under eleven. It just doesn't work.

PROS Sweet themes of love and friendship

Page turner

Cute story!

Violence and Scariness 5/5 Lots of blood, monsters, kidnapping, boy dies, human-like animals stabbed and killed, trolls rotting to death, talk of drinking girl's blood, plans to spear boy's head to collect his knowledge, taxidermy, getting stitches, cat's tail chopped in half, cat talks about being drowned by human.

Sex and Romance 0/5 Not present.

CONS In my opinion, far too scary for the intended age group

Emotional Intensity 2/5 Pet is dead, trapped in a strange world, young boy dies, leaving friends behind, mention of homelessness.

Drinking and Drugs 0/5 Not present.
