The Curve of Time by Muriel Wylie Blanchet

Updated: Jan 7, 2022

The Curve of Time by Muriel Wylie Blanchet is a very interesting collection of

short stories. The stories are written about Muriel (the author) and her five children as they sail the coastal waters of British Columbia on a small sailboat, often accompanied by their dog. Along with the tales of both treacherous and beautiful sailing trips, there are also many stories of the wilderness adventures and friends they encounter along the way.

OVERALL RATING 6.5/10

I did not particularly enjoy this book. Not because it is badly written or has unbelievable characters, or any of the other common reasons for me to not like a piece of literature, no, this book just wasn’t on a subject matter I really love. The book has wonderful writing and some really exciting bits, but all in all I think it’s a bit of an acquired taste. Someone who really loves boats might really like it. I gave it a six point five because, in my opinion, most people will probably find this book pretty boring. All that is not to say that the whole thing was boring for me. There were definitely parts where I laughed or was glued to the pages to find out what would happen next, but overall it just wasn’t very appealing to me.

PROS

Well written and poetic

Adventurous

CONS

Outdated and racist language

Topic is an acquired taste
